PENANCE DURING LENT
Canon 1250 - the days and times of penance for the Universal Church are each Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent. [From Canon 1253 - the Bishops' Conference can determine more particular ways in which fasting and abstinence are to be observed. In place of abstinence and fasting it can substitute other forms of penance, especially works of charity and exercises in piety.]
PS: The mind of the Church is to consult a spiritual director before attempting penances above the ordinary. A little penance is always more efficacious if done in obedience than greater penance without or against the virtue of obedience.

- Candlemas - the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin - Feb 2, 9.00am. Bring candles to be blest before the start of Mass.
- Cleaning Day this month will NOT be on Feb 2 BUT February 9 due to Candlemas falling on the First Saturday.
- Fundraising: The fundraising committee has so far raised $2300. The first item planned is a microphone and speakers for the pulpit.
- Almsgiving: is a major opportunity for penance especially during Septuagesima and Lent. Envelopes will be available from next week.
- Your prayers are requested for Michael Pearce, who has begun chemotherapy treatment, Fr Devine's father, whose operation is due February 18, and Michael Sankey who had a by-pass operation January 21.
- Next Young Adult Education Meeting is after 9.00am Mass on Saturday, January 26. This meeting will be for the boys. Meeting lasts 90 mins

- House Blessings - It is very important to have your house blessed. This is the time of the year to contact the priests and make an appointment. Please inform the priest when your house was last blessed or how long since the last blessing, and whether the Sacred Heart has been enthroned in your home.

Extra Masses during Lent
- Each Friday of Lent 7pm followed by Stations of the Cross
- First Friday, February 1, St Brigid Low Mass, 7.00pm.
- Saturday, February 2, Candlemas - Purification of the Virgin, Solemn Mass, 9.00am. This feast concludes the Christmas season of the Church. Christ, the Light to the Gentiles came to us at Epiphany. Our procession with candles before the Mass shows our willingness to take His Light into the world.
- Sunday, February 3, Blessing of Throats after both Masses.
- Wednesday, February 6, Ash Wednesday, Blessing and Imposition of Ashes precedes Solemn Mass, 7.00pm.
